Regulation
We’re wired for connection. Sometimes we regulate alone, sometimes with others, and sometimes our body takes over for better or worse.
Paradoxically, when we develop the capacity to be with our internal experience without becoming overwhelmed or frightened, we are able to sit with that which is incredibly painful and unpleasant, and not get lost to it, but instead, to let it flow through us, so that we do not get stuck in depression, panic, pain, or survival physiology.
Somatic forms of therapy that include a bottom up way of including the body helps us widen the range of options so we’re not stuck in one mode. We build self-regulation skills, deepen our capacity for co-regulation, and bring more consciousness to our auto-regulation patterns—so we can choose, rather than react.
Welcome to being a beautifully flawed human!
As Victor Frankl wrote: “Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and freedom.”
